Additives play a crucial role in enhancing the performance of powder coatings in various aspects such as production, application, and film properties. Despite being added in smaller quantities compared to resins, curing agents, and pigments, additives have a significant impact on the overall performance of powder coatings.

For the purpose of production and application, powder coating additives can be classified into three main categories:

Texture additives

Texture additives are specifically designed to achieve unique surface finishes and decorative effects on coated surfaces. These additives help to cover surface roughness and create visually appealing textures on the workpiece. Varieties of texture additives include wrinkle agents, hammer texture agents, sand texture agents, foaming agents, and more. These additives are added either internally during the mixing process or externally to achieve desired texture effects.

Conventional additives

Conventional additives are essential for producing standard flat powder coatings. These additives include leveling agents, gloss enhancers, matting agents, and dry powder flow agents. They are used to improve the leveling, gloss, and flow properties of the powder coating during application, as well as enhance its storage stability.

Functional additives

Functional additives are additives that provide additional functionalities to the coating film, such as UV protection, anti-aging properties, impact resistance, adhesion improvement, anti-sticking, flame retardancy, and antistatic properties. This category of additives is diverse and rapidly expanding, with various types available such as anti-yellowing agents, UV absorbers, defoaming agents, light stabilizers, and conductive agents.

By incorporating different types of additives into powder coatings, manufacturers can tailor the properties of the coatings to meet specific performance requirements for a wide range of applications.
